Mia Tang is a Chinese girl who immigrated to the USA two years ago. She'd heard all these amazing things about cheeseburgers, pet dogs, jeans, big houses, and lots of money in the USA, but it turns out there's much more to it than Mia realized. Her family is struggling with money until one day, they're offered a dream job: Managers of the Cal Vista, a motel. Again, though, there's much more than Mia realized. Their horrible boss, Mr. Yao, is really mean, and Mia is teased in school. Her mom wants her to learn math, but Mia wants to learn to write, which is her love and her talent. With the help of some friends, a special contest, and a pencil, can Mia lead her friends and family through the challenges of the USA? Read this book to find out.
I love this book so much; it easily applies to be part of the monthly theme. Amazingly written, Front Desk works its way into every reader's heart, and is one of those good ones you can't put down. With a mix of humor, kindness, and heart-wrenching events, Front Desk deserves fives stars for sure. Review by: UAC
